True Colours (2023) is a multi-part exploration into themes of alienation and belonging, community, and multi-faceted identities. With Canadian landscapes as stages, participants were given colour-by-number colouring pages along with crayons to colour with; however found that some crayons were joined with others in ways that would prove difficult to only use a singular colour in its “correct” field. Participants were posed with the question of how to deal with these complex crayons in their images - would they try to keep them separate? Would they embrace the additional marks the extra crayons would add to their image? Would they attempt to create entirely new areas or combine the two? This project was ultimately an exploration of complex identities and the navigation of social spaces.
